The complex is named after the Greek mythical character Oedipus, who (albeit unknowingly) kills his father and marries his mother.According to Sigmund Freud, the Oedipus complex is a universal phenomenon, built in phylogenetically, and is responsible for much unconscious guilt.

the origin of the OEDIPUS COMPLEX
***********************************************************
Oedipus
King Laius of Thebes was warned by an oracle that as he had, in defiance of the gods, married his cousin Jocasta, he would be slain by his own son born of that union. To avert this disaster, he bade his loyal shepherd kill his newly-born son. The tender-hearted slave, however, could not bring himself to do the evil deed.
...
This child was given the name of Oedipus.

As FATE illustrated, Oedipus killed his father in his anger. Then the young man arrived in the kingdom of Thebes, which ruled by his father once. Round about this time, the Thebans were sore pressed by a woman-headed monster, called Sphinx, who produced a riddle to them and devoured those unable to interpret it. The crown and the hand of the widow queen were offered to anyone who could solve the riddle.
Oedipus met the Sphinx on a cliff.
"WHAT animals walks on four legs in the morning, on two at noon, and on three on three on night?"
"MAN, who creeps in infancy, walks upright in manhood, and supports his steps with a staff in old age."
The Sphinx threw herself down into the valley. Oedipus became king of Thebes and husband of the queen, his mother.

And there is so-called Oedipus Complex, which refers to a person who loves his mother, unnaturally.
It is the origin of the OEDIPUS COMPLEX.

...the boy deals with his father by identifying himself with him. For a time these two relationships(the child's devotion to his mother and identification with his father)processed side by side, until the boy's sexual wishes in regard to his mother become more intense and his father is perceived as an obstacle to them; from this the Oedipus complex originates. His identification with his father then takes on a hostile colouring and changes into a wish to get rid of his father in order to take his place with his mother. Henceforward his relation to his father is ambivalent; it seems as if the ambivalence inherent in the identification from the beginning had become manifest. An ambivalent attitude to his father and an object-relation of a solely affectionate kind to his mother make up the content of the simple positive Oedipus complex in a boy. (P134)
