RESULTS FOR GE-DOPED QUARTZ LAYERS
Fig.1,curves (a),show typical normalized mode curves for an epitaxial guide.Only the bottom few modes are given here,but a total of 25 were used in the profile calculations.Ideally a plot of mode index squared against order number squared would give a straight line for a square well.Deviation from the straight line for the lower modes indicates a narrowing of the well at its base.This is the case observed here; hence a modified step index is predicted.The slight curve in the line joining the index values of the real modes indicates the deviation from a square well,and the more pronounced curvature near to mode zero suggests considerable narrowing at the very bottom of the well.A pronounced change in the slope of the experimental mode curves (points) can be seen at the substrate index value (O%),and this is reproducible in the calculated mode fits (lines).Note that the experimental data is fitted by the computational prediction for the two wavelengths,and the independent blue and red assess- ments of the index profile are closely similar,as shown in Fig.1,curves (b).In order to emphasize the concept of the confinement of the modes in a refractive index “well”,the figures are plotted with a negative going or- dinate.
The reflectivity model allows the use of either an analytic function for the shape of the index profile or a “free” form as in the WKB method.As a result of several alternative trials,these data were fitted as described above using a combination of an exponentially changing interface and a constant base to the well.This allowed the mode spacing curvature to be matched quite successfully for all but the bottom mode.In order to achieve this mode spacing curvature,a profile with a considerably extended interface tail was required,and this was best modeled by means of a sloping section at the well base.The optimum profiles for the data are given by Fig.1,curves (b) and the theoretical modes of these profiles are located on the smooth curves of Fig.1,curves (a).As can be seen,the large curvature near mode zero requires a considerable slope to the base.
